Happy Friday

Happy FRIDAY!!!!

As you can tell I am excited because tomorrow is a hunting day for me and I am as excited as can be to get out there, raise up the TreeWalker Treestand and pull out the new 25wssm Browning A-Bolt and watch the sun rise up over the Rappahannock River.  The tree I am going to be in is about 10 feet from the shore and I can't wait for the deer to come rolling under the stand.

It's going to be a beautiful day!

Good luck to all the hunters out there this weekend and to my good buddy Dennis who will be in his stand at about the same time in the Pocono's, may big bucks grace you all with their presence and offer you all broadside shots at 50 yards.

Patrick Burns from Terrierman Blog wrote a great article/post about the liberal case for gun ownership go see his article.

Tough Birds by Mike Johnson

As unbelievable as this story may sound, it is true. There are no exaggerations and no lies. This is a true story told just as it happened.

Last spring turkey season was crazy! As soon as I was done with finals, I headed up to the farm. The timing couldn't have been any better. Finals week was during the first week of turkey season. That wasn't a big deal because in Missouri, you can only kill one bird during the first week. With school out, I had the next two weeks to fill my tags. Little did I know that it would take nearly two full weeks.

I hunted harder than I ever had. I was up before sunrise and didn't head back in until 1. Dad and I had turkeys all around us every morning. They answered calls while still on the roost. One morning we counted atleast five toms, all within about 100 yards. Every morning, the turkeys would fly down from the roost, hang out for a bit, answer some calls, then disappear. We tried so many different techniques, but nothing worked. After 8 days of hunting without seeing one of our ghostly turkeys, I decided I was going to do anything it took to kill one.

Wolverine Boots - Extreme Comfort for a cold Manitoba Hunt

Testing Products is new to me and it is not a process that I take lightly.  Testing a product such as boots makes me even more nervous especially when on that hunt, I had heard about nothing except the extreme cold that we would be experiencing in Manitoba.  So I packed two pairs of boots on this particular trip.  I could not afford to have a cold pair of boots and not be able to stay in the stand for the entire week.  So with two pairs of boots I had my bag weighing in at a cool 62lbs and luckily no one even checked the weight on my bag.

Luckily and happily, I never had to reach for my second set of boots because the Wolverine Boots passed everything I expected out of a boot.  These boots were warm and comfortable.  I had not broken these boots to be honest and literally had taken them out of the box and threw them into the bag.

Learn more about how these Wolverine boots held up.

Pictures from a Weekend of Hunting Big Fish

Here are some more pictures from hunting big fish in the surf at Nags Head this weekend.

A Weekend away from hunting to go surf fishing with my son Tristan in the Outer Banks

Moments introducing kids to the outdoors are truly priceless!

A weekend off for one on one time with my son Tristan.  We took off at 5:00am on Saturday and made it back home by 8pm on Sunday.  We had an absolute blast.  Our first stop was the Wright Brothers Memorial which was our learning moment for the weekend and then we were off to the bait shop and then to the beach.

We had a great couple of casts with a fish in the first 30 minutes, Tristan's first ever fish out of the ocean was a nice 5 lb Red Drum.  We had a great afternoon and Sunday was just as good.

More Pictures from our trip to come soon...

Wyoming County Residents Form New Pheasants Forever Chapter in New York State

Attica, N.Y. – November 21, 2007 – Residents in New York's Wyoming County have formed the state's newest Pheasants Forever (PF) chapter, the Wyoming County Chapter of PF. The chapter, the state's tenth, is dedicated to increasing the local pheasant population through habitat improvements.

Located in western New York, Wyoming County's pheasant population has dropped off mainly due to changes in farming practices. "We're in a rural area," said Ken Fridmann, the chapter's newly-elected president, "There are bigger farms than there used to be, and that has meant fewer hedgerows that the birds can call home. And the smaller farms have become overgrown and are in need of management."

Indiana Food For the Hungry

As gun seasons in Midwestern states begin to get under way, many hunters will be taking to the woods in hopes of harvesting a deer.  This time of year, thousands of hunters take to the woods for their annual one weekend hunt.  Others however, have been hunting since the beginning of September learning the deer patterns and scouting their favorite hunting areas.  Some do not even plan to hunt this year, but will because their children would like to get out and try it.  Whichever category you fall under, you need to know about the FIsH program in Indiana.

Rifles In Indiana: Is There An Advantage To Using Cowboy Killers?

Several Midwestern states have allowed hunters the use of rifles for many seasons to harvest deer.  Kentucky and Tennessee are two just to name a few.  While Illinois and Indiana in the past have “stuck to their guns” and only allowed shotguns, bows, pistols, and muzzleloaders; Indiana has decided to jump on the band wagon and allow rifles to join the array of weapons allowed to harvest deer in the state.  This has been an ongoing debate in Indiana for several years.  As the policy makers in Indianapolis have come under fire for the increased number of vehicle to deer accidents and the rising numbers in the deer population, they finally caved in and allowed rifles to be used for the first time in the 2007 deer season.

Outside Magazine, Article on Hunting Wolves

The December issue of Outside Magazine has a one page article on hunting wolves.  The great news is that they are endorsing the delisting of wolves in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.  This issue is worth purchasing for the cover price at your local newstand.  It is nice to see great articles about hunting in magazines like Outside and National Geographic!

Mark Popp's Manitoba Deer

Mark Popp took a fantastic deer in Manitoba that measured out just over 150 class.  Just before he shot the buck, he took a picture with his right hand and had the rifle in his left.  Mark shoots left handed and he had a quick shot before the buck disappeared into the brush.  Mark spent the next two hours tracking him and Hans and he lost the trail.  That night it snowed and they had to perform a body search the next morning.  Over the next 2 days we let the ravens find that buck and on Friday Hans was able to pinpoint his location.  We recovered him on Friday afternoon and Mark tagged him and we finished up our day.

Mark, this is a deer to be proud of!!!

In Search of Manitoba Monsters!

What an amazing week it has been.  I got back last night after a long day of flights and delays from Manitoba where we were chasing big Whitetails with the crew from MacFarland Adventures.  Bill MacFarland put this hunt together with a small outfitter out of Manitoba that does no advertising but is well known for the quality of animals and the quality of service that they offer.  We traveled out to Manitoba on Saturday and I was already tired from traveling to the airport a day earlier by mistake.  This might be one mistake that Bill might never let me live down.  I was excited when I booked the trip and for some reason wrote it up on my calendar at the office to be off on the 9th and never even looked at the itinerary because I just knew that the trip was to begin on that day.  I was a bit off and the airline ticket crew let me know that either I was wrong and could fly out the next day or pony up $800.00 for tickets on Friday.  I decided to go home and wait another day.

We got into camp late on Saturday afternoon and had a full meal and then woke up on Sunday to get our gear ready and all of our rifles sighted in.  The Remington 700 in  300 Winchester Magnum topped out with a Leupold Vari-X III was dead on at about 2.5 inches high at a 100 yards and I got 8 great rounds through the rifle.  I got a nice nap in to get rid of some jet lag and then had a night of sleep dreaming of big racks.

Veterans Day - Freedom is not Free

My Goof!!

A Short Story on How Busy I have been.

So this morning at about 4am, I walked into the ticket counter after having just looked at my itinerary for the first time since I booked my tickets over 45 days ago and saw that my flight was Northwestern out of Dulles, VA due out at 6:25.

I had my rifle packed, my bag(full of gear) to pursue a Manitoba Monster Whitetail. I handed over my Passport and prepared to get ready to board.  The Checking attendant told me though, "YOU HAVE NO FLIGHT TODAY.  YOUR FLIGHT IS TOMORROW!!!"

Talk about feeling like an idiot.

I have been so busy lately with a ton of things going on that I never even gave it a second thought, I knew that I was traveling on the 9th and it was set in my mind... i booked the ticket and wrote it on my calendar at the office, put it into my planner and everything.  This morning at 5:00am Bill MacFarland got a call from me and I apologize for waking up his wife but I had to know..

We are flying out on the 10th, just like my ticket says.

SO I will wake up again early, make the two hour drive to Dulles and try it all over again.

Opening Day of Virginia Muzzleloader

Opening day of muzzleloader season was wonderful although I have no deer to report.  I had a really nice doe at about 65 yards and did not take the shot as it was only just light and I felt like I would see more deer.  Frankie shot a really nice, very old 6 pointer that we are pretty sure was on the decline.  His front antlers touched at the tips to form a perfect little circle.

During the afternoon I ran out and sighted in the 300 win mag and I only had 18 rounds with me.  It took me 5 to get onto the paper and once that happened I was able to dial it in with the next 9 rounds at 50 yards.  I pulled up on the 100 yard target and I was 4 inches high at 100 so I dialed it down 8 clicks and took a 3 shot grouping while speed shooting and I came up with a 1.5 inch grouping at 2 inches high.  I AM READY FOR MANITOBA!!

With that bit of happiness, I ran home and picked up Madison to take her on her first hunt and she and I had a hilarious time in the blind looking for deer.  She is just like her sister... DEER... SHOOT EM and EAT EM!  Still have not figured out how to keep munchkins quiet in the blind but we had fun none the less.  Unfortunately would of been better had we seen some deer, but they just were not moving.. No one else at the farm saw any either so I don't feel like we were singled out.

Lock Stock & Barrel, Mens Vogue takes on Hunting

Mens Vogue just ran a whole photo essay on fashion and hunting!  There are some really great pictures and some great shotguns and such.

Monster Whitetail

This is the buck of a lifetime and one that would be a trophy in anyones book regardless of what it scores out at.  Currently it is scoring 211 gross and 198 net and still has to make the 60 day drying period.  Joel Eggers is probably a name you will be hearing about and Randolph County in Southern Illinois just saw its land price jump up several hundred dollars an acre.  An amazing trophy for a 22 year old and an amazing amount of maturity to hang in there for several years and wait him out.
