History and Status of the Lawsuit by Grand Slam Club/Ovis (GSCO) against the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep (FNAWS) and International Sheep Hunters Association (ISHA)
Text of a letter sent to me by the Board of Directors from FNAWS(Foundation for North American Wild Sheep) about the ongoing lawsuit between them and the GSCO(Grand Slam Club/Ovis) that is raging on in Birmingham, Alabama. It is my opinion that these two great organizations need to merge as quickly as possible and follow a very simple mandate on making all decisions in regards to the charitable money they receive. If the decision is not what is best for putting sheep on the mountain then do not do it. Only do things that will directly effect sheep in a positive way on the mountain!
Kevin Paulson
FNAWS LETTER sent to me:
The most important issue currently facing wild sheep and wild sheep hunters is occurring not on the rugged mountain slopes, the home to the majestic wild sheep, but in a drab courtroom in Birmingham, Alabama. A very brief history of how this has occurred is outlined below.
In 1995, FNAWS and GSCO entered into an agreement whereby FNAWS would let GSCO participate in the FNAWS Conventions, in an effort to help build interest in GSCO, while providing some ancillary benefits to FNAWS. This agreement included an introduction of GSCO Executive Director Dennis Campbell to the FNAWS membership (as FNAWS had previously done for Grand Slam Club founder Bob Householder). This contract called for, among other things, that Dennis Campbell would solicit donations on behalf of FNAWS, and that he would provide a one-year written notice of any desired termination of the agreement. Dennis Campbell violated this agreement by using his position with FNAWS to solicit donations to benefit GSCO and that he failed to provide one-years written notice prior to holding the first GSCO Convention in Biloxi. In addition, in 2004, without any warning, or any attempts at negotiations, GSCO unilaterally severed its contractual relationship with FNAWS.

Texas Tops Nation in Ranking of State Hunting and Fishing Economic Impact
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A ranking of states in categories including total number of hunters and anglers, spending by sportsmen, jobs supported, taxes generated, number of days spent hunting and fishing and the most traveled to states by hunters and anglers has been released for the first time.
Nationally, Texas is at the top of the pack. It is No. 1 in total hunters and anglers (2.6 million), money spent ($6.6 billion), jobs supported (106,000) and tax revenue generated ($1.3 billion). Florida lands the trophy for the No. 2 spot.
The new state-by-state rankings were compiled to complement a national report, "Hunting and Fishing: Bright Stars of the American Economy ~ A force as big as all outdoors," which spotlights the immense impact hunters and anglers have on the economy at the national and state level, as well as a constituency.

Doctors VS Guns?
Here's a new twist on the firearms issue.
Doctors:
1 The number of doctors in Canada is 700,000
2. Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000
3. Accidental deaths per physician is 17.14%
Statistics courtesy of the Canadian Dept of Health & Human Services
Guns:
1. The number of guns owned in Canada is 80,000,000 (yes that's 80
Million)
2. The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500
3. The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.001875%
Statistics courtesy of the RCMP
So statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous
Than gun owners.
Remember, guns don't kill people, doctors do.
FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE
DOCTOR.
Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban doctors Before this gets completely out of hand!!!
Out of concern for the public at large, I have withheld statistics on Lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical Attention. Then we would be in real trouble.

Rocky Mountain National Park elk management plan detailed
DENVER - National Park Service employees and authorized agents will be permitted to kill up to 200 elk every year in Rocky Mountain National Park as part of a program announced Tuesday to control the growing herd of about 3,100 animals.
The National Park Service also detailed plans for fencing and other control measures in the $6 million, 20-year population management plan that has taken four years to complete.
Two conservation groups said they will sue the Park Service to block the plan, which they criticized as letting "politics and timidity triumph over science and common sense."

Federal Farm Bill Passes U.S. Senate
By a vote of 79-14, the U.S. Senate Friday passed its version of the Federal Farm Bill. Quail Forever (QF) supports the Farm Bill passed by the Senate, recognizing it as a strong foundation for conservation.
"We applaud U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition & Forestry Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Ranking Member Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) in helping craft a bill that's strong on conservation," said Dave Nomsen, QF's Vice President of Government Affairs, "This Senate action is very good news in that it supports achieving a new Farm Bill early next year, diminishing the chances of extending the existing bill."

Michael Moore Bags a big Saskatchewan Monster
Michael Moore takes this beautiful buck in Northern Saskatchewan on the sixth day of a seven day hunt. Michael is known for going big or going home empty handed and that kind of patience and perseverance really pays off on hunts like these. With negative 20 to 30 degree temperatures and a foot of snow these big bucks were just not moving much so it was few and far between. Mike has 22 of 28 species left on his Grand Slam and I am betting that Mike will accomplish his goal in the next several years.

A mythic white deer
The following pictures are making their way around the internet and I thought I would post them here for you all. Apparently the deer was hit somewhere near Petosky, Michigan on M-68 and to be honest with you I have no idea where that even is or if the story is even true but what I can tell you is that this is one beautiful deer and I hope someone takes it and gets it mounted so it can be on display for people to see in a Cabela's or something in that area.
It is kind of sad to note that this deer was taken by a car and not by a hunter or that it did not have the opportunity to grow and develop its true potential. We can only hope that there are more that will come from his genetics.

Arcadia Plantation: Protecting the Past for the Future
GEORGETOWN, South Carolina - Mrs. Lucille V. Pate and her family continue a long history of land stewardship by granting a Ducks Unlimited conservation easement for Arcadia Plantation. The 3,612-acre easement permanently protects some of the most historically and environmentally important habitat in South Carolina's Lowcountry.
"We are very pleased to be involved in the permanent protection of this crucial Lowcountry habitat," said Craig LeSchack, Ducks Unlimited Director of Conservation Programs for the South Atlantic. "Because of the intensity of land development in the Lowcountry in general, and around Georgetown in particular, the preservation of Arcadia Plantation will yield a significant public benefit."

Conservation Easement to Protect 2,440 Acres Near Prescott, Ariz.
Missoula, Montana - The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has announced a landmark conservation easement on 2,440 acres approximately 15 miles north of Prescott, Ariz.
The easement protects the William and Betty Lo Wells property surrounding Little Thumb Butte, tucked between state lands and the Prescott National Forest. The land provides year-round range for resident elk and winter range for migrating elk. By preventing development, the easement permanently secures habitat important to the region's elk herd and other wildlife.
"With subdivisions encroaching on wild and open land, prime habitat is scarce around Prescott. This new 2,440-acre conservation easement couldn't have come at a more opportune time," said Elk Foundation Regional Director Ron Pittman. "It's also a milestone for the Elk Foundation as this easement is the first donated to our organization in Arizona."

I met Jay several years ago in my attempt to become a world class outfitter I sought out Jay Houston several years ago to come in and hunt with our team and offer me as much advise as humanly possible to help us become one of the best in the industry. Jay worked with me and got to go on a great hunt and we have talked on and off for the last several years. Hunting Report from Last Saturday
Weekend hunting report from Saturday December 1st, 2007. I spent the day out on the Martin Farm in Richardsville, VA. This farm usually has a high concentration of deer on it during the rifle season and I am not sure what is going on. The rut seems to be over and the deer seem to be hanging in the thick oaks where there is an abundance of acorns.
I have some great pictures from the day and I had my first day in the stand with the GunTriever and I really like this product. I did unload my gun and decided to do a test and drop the gun off the stand with the Guntriever attached and it held my gun with the barrel going down to the ground. This is a great product and you should all check it out. For the price, I will carry it with me whenever I plan on going into the stand.
This might be my last day in the deer woods until the 24th of December in which I will get a morning hunt in before heading home to family to cook our Christmas Eve Dinner.
Hope you all like the pictures!

20,000 Acres of Forest Land Permanently Protected through Georgia Land Conservation Program
ATLANTA - Standing on the bank of Corley Lake in Paulding County with a scenic view of the Paulding Forest behind him, Governor Sonny Perdue announced today a monumental investment in land conservation. The state of Georgia, through an investment of $35 million and additional federal, local and private funds, will protect approximately 20,000 acres of pristine forest lands in Paulding, Decatur and McIntosh Counties.
"On the opposite shore of this lake, you see a rolling hillside with a beautiful stand of timber on it. Today I am proud to announce that due to the hard work and investment of many partners, we can guarantee views like this will be protected for generations to come," said Governor Sonny Perdue. "As a part of the Land Conservation Program, the state of Georgia, along with federal, local and private partners, will purchase and conserve nearly 20,000 acres of land at three sites across our state."

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Names New Chief Executive Officer
(December 4, 2007) Missoula, Montana - The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's Board of Directors announced today that it has selected David Allen as the Elk Foundation's new president and chief executive officer.
A lifelong conservationist with a deep passion for elk and hunting, Allen says he will rededicate the Elk Foundation to its core mission of ensuring the future of elk, other wildlife and their habitat. "We will focus on two primary paths for our mission: permanent land protection and stewardship," Allen says. "The Elk Foundation is in a class by itself when it comes to conserving wildlife habitat. In excess of 5 million acres secured and enhanced in the past 24 years is astounding. It speaks volumes on what we do best."
Allen aims to bring his wealth of marketing and business experience to work for protecting elk country. He began his career as Media Director for the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association and served as Director of Special Events for Wrangler Jeans. He went on to create his own sports marketing agency where he directed marketing and sponsorships for the Dale Earnhardt/Richard Childress race teams and other NASCAR teams until Dale's death in 2001 at the Daytona 500. Allen has spent 33 years marketing pro rodeo, the Pro Bull Riders Tour and NASCAR, and served on the board of the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation.

Nebraska's Bill Baxter Leaves a Legacy
Nebraska's Bill Baxter Leaves a Legacy
His hope was to inspire others to do the same
Story by Larry Porter
Cancer had extracted all but the ultimate penalty, yet the love of his farm – the wildlife, the carefully planned and planted habitat – still flamed in Bill Baxter’s soul.
Baxter motioned for his son to come to his bedside. In a weak voice, he asked Bill Jr. to go outside, drive around the place, come back and give him a report. The younger Baxter, who lives in Raleigh, N.C., had been making evening reports of the wildlife activity on the farm to his dad for more than a week. It was early February. Death was near, but the elder Baxter remained a committed, curious wildlife biologist.

Christmas Gift Ideas from US Cavalry
The last 4 years I have been hunting with the following pack from Camelbak and I know that many hunters are looking for a great pack. I have continued to use my pack and I have not seen anything for the money that rivals this Commander Pack from Camelbak.
We have teamed up with US Cavalry to offer you help you with your Holiday Shopping for that special hunter. Take a look at all the pictures and you will see this pack has been through it all! If your looking for a great gift for that hunter and he needs a pack that is good for overnights or a great day pack for the man who likes to carry a bit of extra gear, this is the pack for you!

What to Say to a Person who has Never Hunted
by Randall L. Eaton, Ph.D. Advisor to Conservation Force
Who is the greatest conservationist in the history of the world? The answer is, "The best known hunter in the history of the world," Teddy Roosevelt. What few people know is that he was the first man to write about women's rights, the subject of his senior thesis at Harvard. The paradox perplexes ecofeminists.Does hunting teach violence? What do you think Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela would say? They both received the Nobel Peace prize - and both are avid hunters.
In a questionnaire survey I did of 2500 hunters, average age of 55, 97% male, I asked what events in their lives opened their hearts and engendered compassion in them. The prevailing choice by women was “becoming a parent,” but for men it was, “taking the life of an animal.”

Revenues Generated by Hunters and Anglers Would Rank #11 on the Fortune 500
Washington, DC: Spending over $70 billion dollars a year in pursuit of their pastime, America’s hunters and anglers would rank #11 on the Fortune 500 if they formed a corporation according to a new report released today by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation and the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Over 38 million Americans enjoy the outdoors – twice the number of labor unions members – and sportsmen support 1.2 million jobs, well more than Wal-Mart™, the country’s largest employer. American sportsmen are a demographic group worth a closer look.

Hunting and the Conservation Ethic
by Randall L. Eaton, Ph.D., Advisor to Conservation Force
The November 2007 National Geographic article, “Hunters: For Love of the Land,” is important for the future of hunting. No doubt it will plant seeds in the minds of many people in the middle ground who care about nature and wildlife but who do not hunt. So it is a major success compared to what has been for the most part "a failure to communicate” by the hunting community.
If Dr. Wade Davis, the anthropologist interviewed, had compared the way subsistence hunters feel about animals they hunt to how recreational hunters feel the article would have been better yet. While we have a hunting tradition in North America, we lack a hunting culture. Let me explain. If you talk to people on the street who have no direct experiential or familial link to hunting about how Native Americans feel about animals they hunt, nearly all will offer responses such as, "They respect animals," or "They have reverence for nature," or "They feel spiritually connected to wildlife."
