Outfitter Review - Horns Whitetail Adventures
Horns Whitetail Adventures near Sled Lake Saskatchewan is a fantastic operation for bears and whitetails. I had the pleasure of taking a trip to this outfit during the spring of 2007. I had the pleasure of meeting P.J. Wright several months before and had talked with him and I decided to go bear hunting at his operation. I had the pleasure of getting to hunt with the team from Just Kill'n Time and we filmed this hunt for their television show.
We spent 5 days in the stand with my bow and each and every day was an adventure.
Day one we saw many bears but all of them were on the smaller side. We could easily see that these bears were very nervous about being on the bait that first day in the stand. Being that close to so many bears was an absolute thrill.
Day two we had two small bears come into our bait and just as the second bear left off to the west in came a real bruiser from the east. He was a shooter and he took a good 15 minutes to circle the stands and come into the bait. Just as he got to the bait, he skipped a quick step and rose up to the tree to check out the beaver bait that was in the tree. I drew back and pulled up on this bear and placed the pins right on his vitals and he dropped right into the arrow as it hit right behind his ear. We spent the next hour reviewing the tape and we know he was not hit mortally. It was a frustrating situation but when you are hunting sometimes situations like this are going to happen. I can say today that I have learned from that error and will let the bears calm down before thinking about taking a shot.
Day three we were back in the same stand and we saw more bears then ever but still no shooters.
Day four we moved to a stand that was getting tore apart each and every day and the set up looked just amazing but we did not have a single visit from mister bear.
Day five and the last day in the stand and we held out until the last hour to take a nice bear. He was not the bruiser that we were hoping for but he is an amazing trophy to me as my first bear taken with a bow. It was a perfect shot and the bear ran a total of 30 yards.
The team at Horns Whitetail Adventures is fantastic. P.J. Wright, Bobby Shipe, Johnny, Darrin, Kelly and Bertha are all excellent to work with!
The beds were comfortable with extra blankets in each room, showers and restrooms in every room to stay clean and scent free.
The food was excellent and with all but two of them living in the area full time the local knowledge of the area brought us tremendous food including wild rice collected right there on Sled Lake. Bertha can cook and I know I gained weight while in this bear camp.
The lodge is well laid out with an area for sleeping and resting and an separate lodge for eating. The advantage this provides is that your clothes are never going to smell like the scent of food. Max had the pleasure of hunting whitetails at this lodge and it was all he could talk about was the amazing hunt he had that fall. Max is a straight shooter and if wanted to return for whitetails I know that is a huge recommendation.
Kelly guided us all week and he was excellent to be around. We knick named him Kelly Earnhardt because when we got into the gator he zoomed the gas on that four wheeler to get across the mud. We joked all week and with him and he was a riot to be around.
I look forward to the opportunity to go back to this outfitter again someday and I will recommend them to anyone that will listen. The bugs are thick but a thermacell works wonders to control the bugs, bring one with you. These guys love archery hunters for bear season and have stands for both rifle and archery hunters.
