Cabela’s Awarded NWTF Corporate Achievement Award

ATLANTA — Each year, the National Wild Turkey Federation honors a corporate partner that has been outstanding in its efforts to promote wild turkey conservation and hunting.

This year, the NWTF awarded Cabela’s the Corporate Achievement Award during the Federation’s annual Convention and Sport Show at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Ga., Feb. 21 to Feb. 24.

Committed to inspiring people to enjoy and conserve the great outdoors, Cabela’s is a long-time supporter of the NWTF and its outreach programs.

“Dick and Jim Cabela and the entire team at Cabela’s have set the standard for manufacturers understanding the importance of supporting conservation,” said NWTF CEO Rob Keck. “Ultimately, this giant in outdoors catalog and retail sales is dedicated to America’s hunting heritage and conservation legacy, and they give a lot back to keep that heritage alive.”

An NWTF partner since 2001, Cabela’s sponsors the annual NWTF Turkey Shoot and offers a chapter clothing program that helps local chapters put their names and logos on high-quality shirts and other apparel. Cabela’s has contributed nearly a half-million dollars for the NWTF’s on-the-ground conservation work and outreach programs, in addition to spending tens of thousands of advertising dollars in NWTF publications each year. The outdoors catalog and retail giant also supports the annual NWTF Convention and Sports Show with donations of hunts for auction and raffle packages.

“They’ve been a great partner of the NWTF by supporting our outreach programs every year since they became one of our partners,” said Dick Rosenlieb, NWTF’s vice president of sales and marketing. “By combining partners such as Cabela’s with top-notch volunteers, we’re sure to continue doing great things for conservation and our hunting heritage.”

Cabela’s bills itself as the World’s Foremost Outfitter of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear. The company was born somewhat inadvertently in 1961 when Dick Cabela came up with a plan to sell fishing flies from his home in Chappell, Neb. Cabela ran a classified ad in the Casper, Wyo., newspaper that read: “12-hand-tied flies for $1.” It generated one response.

Undaunted, Cabela formulated a new plan, rewriting the ad to read: “FREE Introductory Offer! 5 hand tied flies…25c Postage…Handling.” He placed the ad in national outdoor magazines, and it didn’t take long for orders to begin arriving from sportsmen and women around the country.

From those humble beginnings around a kitchen table, Cabela’s has grown into a multi-national catalog, retail and Internet business, providing more than 500 jobs at its world headquarters in Sidney, Neb. Employees enjoy working in a massive building that covers nearly a quarter-million square feet. They now produce 76 different catalogs, with sales in all 50 states and 120 countries. Cabela’s retail stores have been opened in 26 communities across the United States, with seven more slated to open soon. Many of these stores offer special discounts and opportunities for local NWTF chapter events.
