Gearing Up for Idaho by Joshua Rather

It has been an exciting couple of months for my dad and me; since we found out I would be going on a bear hunt.  We sat down and talked to Kevin about me attending taxidermy classes this fall and if he knew anybody that would donate a bear hide that I could use in my classes..  A few days later Kevin called and told me, “I found you a bear hide, but you have to kill it first”.  I was confused at first but then I realized he was sending me on a bear hunt for HuntingLife.  I couldn’t tell him how excited and thankful I was. Ever since my sister, Taylor, went on her bear hunt and took a big black bear, I had always dreamed of going on a bear hunt.

The outfitter that we will be hunting with is Big Timber Outfitters of Salmon, Idaho.  We have been talking a lot with them to make sure we have all the right gear that we will need to be comfortable.  We will be riding horseback into a camp that they have set up for us miles away from civilization up in the mountains where we will be staying for our hunt.   My guide will be Billijo Beck; she is the owner of Big Timber Outfitters.  She has explained to me the different types of hunting methods I can try like running dogs, spot-n-stalk, and bait sites.  I have also asked what type of weapon I should bring and she suggested that I could bring a rifle or a bow, but after looking at the pictures she showed us I realized I would be best taking my Mossberg .270 and my dad decided to take his Tikka .308.

My dad and I have spent the last month sighting our rifles in and making sure we can shoot at long ranges.  We have shot different kinds of ammo to see which one shoots best and made sure our rifles are in excellent shooting condition.  We have also made sure we have all the camping gear and supplies they said we would need since we will be miles from civilization.

This will be a time for me and my dad to spend some time together and have a little fun.  We leave June 5 through the 15. I am very excited and cant to write a story when I get back and let you all know how it went and what an amazing time I had.
