We get down and dirty with the Free Collection from Leatherman
The Free Collection from Leatherman is a ground up rebuild of the multi-tool. They have basically reinvented the multi-tool as we know it. Pretty crazy since they actually invented the multi-tool and now decades later they are changing everything. This time with magnets. Over the past month we tested the FREE P2 multi-tool, and we found this tool to be outstanding.
Think of accessing a tool within your multi-tool. Now imagine trying to do this with cold hands. You fumble with the multi-tool trying to pull out the right tool. Leatherman’s new concept with the Free Collection multi-tools addresses this situation. The Free Collection is focused on making the multi-tools from Leatherman easier to open, thus giving you the freedom to access them more quickly. Historically, Leatherman designed the multi-tool to store the actual tools on the inside of the multi-tool. This meant that the user had to open the tool to get at the tools. Now the tools are on the outside. The user can open all of these tools with just one hand. Each of these tools stays in place with the help of magnetic elements. An internal locking system helps to reduce wear. You can feel and hear the tools snap into place. Ultimately, what really matters with a multi-tool is the ease of deployment. This is what Leatherman’s Free Collection provides.
The FREE P2 is one such tool that we believe you will be comfortable adding to your kit for everyday carry. The grey nylon sheath holds the tool, and the built-in belt clip lets you carry it without the sheath. The Free series comes with many of the features you expect in a Leatherman, as shown in the list below.
The Leatherman P2 is a 19-tool version that retails at $120.00, while the P4 is a 21 tool version that comes in at $140.00. Leatherman expects to release a T series in June, and a K series will come out in August. All of the knives and tools incorporate this magnetic structure. You can see the entire Free collection at the Leatherman website.
