Boyds Gunstock Review
I needed a new stock for my Remington 870 and while I was at the NRA show, I took a serious look at the offerings from Boyds. I decided it was time to order something I really wanted for my shotgun. I had swapped out the butt stock on this shotgun years ago to make it easy for the kids to shoot turkeys and now it was time for a serious upgrade. Once home, I got carried away and not only ordered the stock I wanted for the 870 but I also got a stock for Marjorie’s 22-250.
The Savage Model 11 is a left handed 22-250 rifle that we purchased specifically for Marjorie and it has never really fit her frame. I wanted to find her a stock that we could work into something that would fit her and be comfortable to shoot. I also knew this would be the rifle that we would be teaching our daughter to shoot with because of the lack of recoil and it was left handed. (Like mother, like daughter).
We settled on the AT-One stock which allows us to fit this rifle to Marjorie as well as our 13-year old daughter. Boyds created this adjustable gunstock that has Bring-it Push-Button Adjustment Technology. The stock has buttons on the rear stock which adjust the butt length and the comb so your cheek fits perfectly. In our situation, we will be using this between two different shooters. The concept of this AT-One is transition between different shooters as well as in situations where you may be shooting in a shirt mid-day but in a heavy jacket early in the morning and you need just a little different distance to get the perfect eye relief on your scope. You can also purchase a target grip specifically for shooting prone. We skipped the target grip and stayed with a more traditional swept back pistol grip design. The lower butt stock and sling swivel are removable which allows carrying the firearm easier and from various points.
Once we got the stocks in, I tried to install them myself and, well, I am not the gunsmith that I thought I was. I stopped by our local gun store and I was happy to pay the local gunsmith to mount the stocks for me. I needed a washer to mount to the butt stock to my 870 and the magazine box on the AT-One needed just a hair of sanding to make the magazine box fit perfectly. The extra money to have a professional work on this was worth every penny. My gunsmith used pressure tape on the AT-One and had nothing but compliments for how smoothly this stock mounted up to the Savage.
My buddy, Eldondo, has been a fan of the Boyds stocks for several years now. He built his Browning X Bolt in 30-06 Springfield with some very cool customization and has now taken that rifle on quite a few successful hunts. All of these stocks are quality made with laminated wood. You can choose the colors, the customization and they have models to fit just about every rifle on the market.
Check out the AT-One as well as all of the great stocks from Boyds. Make your rifle your own with one of these stocks. I am glad I went through this process and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. I will look to Boyds again for one more rifle in the next year and honestly, I could not be more excited to pick out a new rifle and a new stock and create something that is customized exactly like I want it.
