It’s nice to have some good tools handy to reach for and rely upon in the field and in the kitchen. Here are a few I recently used:
- The Any Sharp Edge – It’s a knife/axe/trowel blade sharpener. It is hand-held and quickly revives dull blunt tools and knives with easy light strokes. I like the Any Sharp Edge because I can throw it in my pack and it is with me in the happy event I need to do some butchering in the field. The bright orange color is helpful in finding it in the bottom of my pack or on the ground when I set it down. This is a great handy tool in your backpack and for only $13.99 you can keep your knives sharp in the field.
- The Any Sharp Knife Sharpener – This one is a knife and scissor sharpener. It is ideal for the kitchen, as it has suction cup grip which allows me to keeps my hands away from the blade and the tool as I am sharpening. The sharpener simply suctions onto my counter, and with easy strokes I can safely sharpen my knives during messy jobs like processing meat. A couple of weeks ago, we used this while processing deer meat. Hands were slick, efficiency and safety were forefront, and the Any Sharp Knife Sharpener was right where we needed it on the counter. It stayed in place and it effectively kept our knife blades sharp throughout the process. These run in the range of $18.00-$27.00 depending on the model. It really is quite handy.
- The Smart Sizzors – These scissors are a great addition to the kitchen. While it has features that open bottles, strip wires, crack nuts, and crush garlic (excessive, in my opinion), I like the scissors for their main purpose: to cut through meat and bone. I recently used the Smart Sizzors to cut up a whole chicken. The scissors made easy and safe work of this task. It’s made of tempered steel, has a large comfortable grip, is dishwasher safe, and can be used left or right handed. Not a bad deal for $10.99.
