Fifteen Years of Breaking Barriers and Expanding Opportunity for Women in the Firearms Industry

Austin, TX (AGirlandAGun.org) — On February 28, 2026, A Girl & A Gun celebrates its 15th anniversary, marking a milestone that reflects not only longevity, but lasting influence on the way women participate in the shooting sports and the way the industry engages them.

Founded in 2011 as a single chapter designed to create a welcoming and structured training environment for women, A Girl & A Gun has grown into a national organization serving 33,912 members across 235 chapters, supported by 334 certified instructors delivering professional curriculum in pistol, rifle, shotgun, defensive skills, and competitive disciplines.

Over the past decade and a half, the firearms landscape has shifted. Women have become one of the fastest-growing segments in firearms ownership, not only purchasing equipment, but investing in training, competition, and long-term skill development. That growth did not happen in isolation. It required structure. It required leadership. It required opportunity.

A Girl & A Gun built that framework.

“Fifteen years ago, women were often treated as a niche within the firearms space,” said Robyn Sandoval, President & CEO of A Girl & A Gun. “What we understood early on is that women were not looking for novelty. They were looking for competence, professionalism, and community. By building structured training pathways and leadership development, we created an environment where growth could be sustained.”

Today, A Girl & A Gun operates with a formal leadership model, instructor certification pathways, standardized curriculum, and a nationally recognized training conference that has become one of the largest women-only shooting events in the country. Members progress from new shooters to competitors, instructors, and chapter leadership through a clearly defined development pipeline that strengthens both local ranges and the broader industry.

Sandra Woodruff, Chief Operating Officer and facilitator of the Austin, Texas chapter, has witnessed that transformation at the ground level.

“What began as an opportunity to bring women together at the range has evolved into a leadership engine,” said Woodruff. “When a woman gains confidence through training, she influences her family, her community, and often her local range. Over time, that influence compounds. Fifteen years of intentional leadership development has created momentum that extends far beyond any single chapter.”

As A Girl & A Gun looks to the future, its focus remains strategic and forward-facing. The organization is expanding its role as both a training network and an industry resource by providing data and analysis that inform manufacturers, retailers, and range operators. It is strengthening relationships with ranges nationwide to expand access and professional collaboration. It is enhancing curriculum to meet the needs of shooters at every stage of development. And it is establishing new corporate partnerships that recognize the economic and cultural influence of women in the firearms marketplace.

The anniversary represents proof of concept. A structured approach to education, leadership, and community does more than increase participation. It changes perceptions. It strengthens standards. It expands opportunity.

“As we mark fifteen years, the work is not finished,” Sandoval said. “The demand for high-quality training continues to grow, and so does the responsibility to lead with professionalism and integrity. The next chapter will focus on scaling what works and deepening the partnerships that allow women to thrive in this space.”
