Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources to present Asian Carp & Bass Fishing Seminars at Paducah Expo

PADUCAH, Ky. (January 7, 2020) — The Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) will be presenting seminars on the hot-button topic of Asian Carp, along with Bass Fishing at Kentucky Lake, during the Kentucky Outdoor Life/Field & Stream Expo presented by Suzuki KingQuad, January 17-18 at the Paducah-McCracken County Convention Center.

The first seminar is entitled: Asian Carp: What is KDFWR doing?

This seminar, led by Jessica Morris, will present points on how KDFWR is actively engaged in the battle against invasive Asian carp species, particularly in Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake. This seminar will provide an overview of current projects and future plans that KDFWR has for stopping the spread of Asian carp in Kentucky’s waterways.

Morris, who is a Fisheries Biologist with KDFWR, has been working on Asian Carp issues in Western Kentucky for four years and is the crew leader for the KDFWR Critical Species Investigations branch in Western Kentucky, which focuses primarily on Asian carp research and removal. Morris is involved with the growing commercial fishing industry for Asian carp, monitoring population characteristics and assisting with the Bio-Acoustic Fish Fence deployed at Barkley Lock & Dam.

The second seminar is entitled: What happened to the bass at Kentucky Lake?

This seminar, led by Adam Martin, will provide an exhaustive look into all of the factors that have affected bass fishing in Kentucky Lake, including the popular opinion of too many tournaments, too many Asian carp, natural cycling and a lack of grass. The seminar will provide attendees with the most complete picture of the past, present and future of bass fishing in Kentucky Lake and in lakes across the country.

Martin is the sport fish biologist for KDFWR in western Kentucky. He grew up in Western Kentucky and holds a master’s degree in biology from Murray State University.  As the sportfish coordinator, Martin’s primary job is to improve the fishing for the citizens of Kentucky. There has certainly been a spotlight on bass fishing in the twin lakes and there is no shortage of opinions about what has been affecting the fishery.
