LOWA Irox GTX Mid Trekking Boot Review

2017 is the year of the trek and I will be doing it with the LOWA Irox GTX Mid trekking boots.  I have the boots, now I need to find a great pack and I need to find a route.  The Irox GTX Mid boots arrived just a few days ago and within an hour of them arriving at my door they were on my feet and remained in use over the entire weekend as I worked around the house, the yard and did some short walks around the neighborhood.

I was excited to get these boots in my hand.  I had read about how these boots were created with input from Alpinist Ralf Dujmovits.  These boots were created to provide stability and comfort in a lightweight, athletic design.  The LOWA Elika Grip soles provide a roll-off motion, fantastic tread support and soft rubber to increase cushioning and comfort.  The tops are abrasion-resistant synthetic that is, as advertised, 100% vegan.  Personally, I always have to kind of laugh when I see that a boot is vegan.  I am taking them turkey hunting to break them in so after they get a little messy and a little blood on them and then washed off, they will be perfect.

The LOWA IROX GTX Mid boots weigh 1200 grams.  They breath well which was exactly what I was looking for in this boot.  I knew that I would be trekking in the summer when the kids were out of school and we could break away.  While my goal is to complete the John Muir Trail, I plan on starting on a small 25-40 mile hike to break in my boots and honestly to break in my body.  I knew that I wanted a breathable boot that was also waterproof and with the Gore-tex lining, I don’t have to worry about morning dew, rain, or walking through water under 4 inches deep.

I am really impressed with the Elika Grip soles on these boots.  They provide a soft feel on rocks and fantastic grip.  I took them out to the park and climbed around on a couple of large boulders and they held very strong on rock.  I also like the support they provide my ankles.  These boots lace up tight, breath well and hold secure which is exactly what you want in a summer trekking boot.  LOWA has been building great boots for over 90 years.  These boots are handcrafted in Europe and LOWA is the only footwear manufacturer in the world to be granted the ISO 9001 status for highest quality construction and process standards. When you invest in a pair of these boots you are investing in a company that is dedicated to providing best-in-class footwear and a reputation that been built by taking customers for over nine decades.  LOWA stands so strongly behind their boots that they repair, recondition and resole their boots right in their factory in Germany.
