Maryland Black Bear Hunting Anyone?

20080806_4

Dear Maryland Hunter:

Maryland Department of Natural Resources will be offering its fifth Black Bear Hunting season later this year.

We put together an online guide to hunting black bear in Maryland and other useful information, including testimonials, in response to many requests from hunters like yourself.

The black bear hunting season is scheduled to take place October 20, 2008 – October 25, 2008. In order to allow all interested parties an equal opportunity to participate, the permits will be awarded by a random selection process, which will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2008. A list of winning applicants will be available online at http://blackbear.dnr.state.md.us starting 5 p.m. EST on Friday, September 5, 2008.

In order to allow all interested parties an equal opportunity to participate, 220 permits will be awarded by a random selection process, which will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2008. If selected in the drawing, you will be allowed to choose up to 2 people to share in your hunt. For more information on subpermittees, please see the 2008 Black Bear Hunting Regulations.

Applications are being accepted to enter the 2008 Maryland Black Bear Hunting Permit Lottery beginning Friday, August 1, 2008.

You have two ways to apply:

Apply Online
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from 9 a.m. on August 1 through 6 p.m. on September 1.
Go now to: http://blackbear.dnr.state.md.us

Or By Phone
1-888-579-6768 from Monday, August 25, through Friday, August 29 only. The hours of the call center will be from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

You will be required to pay a $15 non-refundable application fee and are limited to submitting only 1 application. Multiple applications will result in the rejection of all applications from that individual.

We offer a “preference point” system for those applying this year and in future years. This means if you applied in 2007 and continue to apply in subsequent years, you will get an extra entry into future drawings for each consecutive year you apply. If you are selected, then your points start at “0” the following year. New this year, you may purchase a preference point and not be entered into the 2008 drawing. This is a requested feature for those hunters who know they will not be able to bear hunt this year, but still want to maintain their preference points without being entered into the drawing. Hunters who choose the ‘preference point only’ option will be charged the same nonrefundable $15 application fee as those who are entering the lottery for this year’s hunt.

We hope you agree that the preference point system is a worthwhile addition to the application process and that you will share this email with your hunting buddies. Good luck in this year’s lottery.

Sincerely,
Paul

We put together an online guide to hunting black bear in Maryland and other useful information in response to many requests from hunters like yourself. What hunters have said about the hunt

“I had the best time ever. The DNR and biologist at the check station were very kind and helpful. We had to wait until the following day to check the bear in. With a few calls we all worked it out. I am very proud to be included in the bear management program. What nasty weather! Keep the hunt alive!”
