Rifle Selection for Big Game Hunting

A common question new hunter’s ask is “What caliber of rifle do I need to hunt?. Now this will depend on a few different variables. The first thing you need to consider is what are your state’s regulations regarding firearms. Be sure to check the regulations because some states will not allow you to hunt with certain calibers, while other states will.

Accuracy is something you also want to think about when choosing a rifle. For those new to shooting, selecting a large caliber rifle can cause you to flinch while shooting, therefore making your shot inaccurate. Being accurate with a smaller caliber rifle will be more effective than inaccuracy with a more powerful large caliber.

Choosing a rifle scope will also be something you will want to consider before you purchase a rifle. You want to leave some room in your budget for a quality scope. You can buy the most expensive high performance rifle, but if you put a cheap scope on it the rifle will most likely not perform to its highest capabilities.

Once you have selected your rifle and scope combination, you will then need to pick out some ammunition to use. At first you are going to want to test out multiple types of brands of ammo. You can then shoot groups with these different types of ammunition and see which one shoots the best out of your rifle. Some ammo will shoot great out of your rifle while others will not tightly group.

Hopefully these tips will help you get out there and have a successful hunt this upcoming season!
