Anyone who is a fan of surfing knows the name of Shane Dorian. He is currently one of the best big wave surfers in the world. He is also a hunter. Shane Dorian worked with the team at Time Concepts to create the ICON Shane Dorian Signature line of watches. We got the opportunity to test this watch, and it is as solid of a watch as Shane is a surfer.
Shane Dorian became a hunter after moving up to the mountains from the beach. Wild pigs kept digging up everything in his garden, and his neighbor introduced him to bow hunting the wild pigs. Since then, Shane has branched out to deer and elk. He is incredibly passionate about hunting and is teaching his young kids and those around him about the need to embrace hunting.
Invention and collaboration are not new to Shane Dorian. In 2010, following a harrowing escape after a double wave kept him pinned under water at Mavericks, Shane invented the first “Safety Suit” device to help surfers rise to the surface. This suit uses a CO2 cartridge built into a wetsuit vest to torpedo surfers to the surface in an effort to keep them alive.
With this background, we were happy to see that Shane Dorian worked with Time Concepts to create the ICON Shane Dorian Signature Line. We asked Shane what he liked about these watches for hunting. “I prefer wilderness hunts and am very tough on all of my equipment. I love the rugged steel case construction of the watch and knowing I don’t have to think about it while making my way through rough terrain. The stylish genuine rubber strap is very comfortable and functional in all weather conditions. I also love the brightness of the lume, which allows me to easily see it while walking back to camp in the dark.”
I found the ICON Shane Dorian watch to be tough and rugged. The 5303 version I have has a brushed stainless-steel case with IP Gun Gray plating. It is an exceptionally good-looking watch. The unidirectional bezel works flawlessly and the thick Swiss SuperLuminova Lume glows bright and strong which is great when you are heading to the tree stand and even stronger when you leave the tree stand in the evening. Water resistant to 200 meters, this watch will take just about anything you can throw at it. Regardless of whether you are in the board room, around the kitchen table in hunting camp or in the field, this watch looks great and sells at a price point that will not stop you from being able to buy more arrows come fall.
