The U.S. Concealed Carry Association Sends Letter to President Biden Urging Support for National Concealed Carry Reciprocity

“The Path Forward Should Be Focused on Supporting and Protecting Responsible, Law-abiding Americans — Not Criminalizing and Punishing Them”

West Bend, WI – On behalf of more than 550,000 members, U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) President and Founder Tim Schmidt sent a letter to President Biden today urging him to consider a new path on “commonsense gun law reforms” with the goal of keeping Americans safe by ensuring they can protect their families and loved ones at all times.

The letter comes in the wake of a recent statement by President Biden that called on Congress to pass a range of new gun laws that the USCCA said today “would do virtually nothing to reduce crime or help more Americans keep their families safe.”

In just a few short weeks, the USCCA has gathered roughly 100,000 signatures from Americans in support of national concealed carry reciprocity.  H.R. 38, The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2021, was recently introduced by U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC) to allow law-abiding Americans to protect themselves and their families at all times by ensuring that a concealed carry permit in one state is recognized in other states that allow residents to carry.

In today’s letter, the USCCA also took issue with Biden’s proposal to impose a new tax on millions of gun owners which would disproportionately harm working-class Americans who can least afford it during these difficult economic times.  “Lower-income Americans should not be forced to choose between protecting their families and breaking the law or handing over their firearms to the government and leaving their homes unprotected,” Schmidt wrote today.

If you are truly interested in advocating for commonsense gun law reforms that are grounded in reality rather than anti-gun political ideology, we urge you to consider a new path with the goal of keeping Americans safe by ensuring they can protect their families and loved ones at all times…. National concealed carry reciprocity — not higher taxes or more stringent regulations on already responsible gun owners, and certainly not removing the means by which those responsible gun owners can defend themselves and their loved ones — is a truly ‘commonsense’ reform that will help more Americans keep their families safe. We urge you to support it,” Schmidt concluded.

In 2020, more than 5 million new gun owners joined the 100 million-plus gun owners already in the United States.  As sales skyrocketed, so did the demand for firearm safety and training courses.  The USCCA now has over 550,000 paying members and has experienced exponential growth in education and training over the last year.  The USCCA also has over 7,000 instructors across the country, including the addition of more than 2,000 in the last year alone.

The USCCA has long advocated for passage of a national concealed carry reciprocity bill, even being featured on CBS’ 60 Minutes in a story about Congressman Hudson’s legislation back in February 2018.
