Wiley X Captivate Review

Wiley X has launched the new Captivate Polarized Lenses designed for sunny conditions and changing light conditions this year.  Wiley X builds every lens and 100% of its eyewear to meet the Z87.1 safety and clarity standards for protection.  While at SHOT show, we visited the Wiley X booth where we talked about prescription eyewear.  We will talk about the prescription eyewear in a separate article.  When we got home we had a pair of the WX Omega Sunglasses sitting on our desk with a note to test them in the wild and see what we thought.  We received the WX Omega Sunglasses with Captivate™ Bronze Mirror lens color and the Matte Black frames.

The package comes with a black zippered clamshell case, a Wiley X cleaning cloth, a leash cord with rubber grips and, of course, the Omega Sunglasses.  The WX Omega come in 5 options and the following features:

  • Lightweight frame
  • Meets or exceeds ANSI Z87.1 industrial standards for high-mass and high-velocity impact protection.
  • Captivate™ Polarized Bronze Mirror lenses designed for sunny conditions and for changing light conditions.
  • 100% UVA/UVB protection with distortion free clarity
  • Bridge 17/Temple 125/Width 66

Wiley X Safety Standards

Wiley X builds every lens to meet the strictest ANSI optical requirement the ANSI Z87.1 clarity standard to provide for accuracy of vision, diffusion of light, variations of luminous transmittance and angle dependence on luminous transmittance.  While we barely understand that last sentence, we do understand that the clarity of these lenses are exceptional.  Wiley X also builds all lenses to a high impact test which allows the frames and lenses to withstand the weight of a 1.1 pointed projectile dropped from a height of 50” to ensure that your eyes are protected from heavy impacts.  Wiley X also survives the ANSI High Velocity Impact test on many models which allows the frames and lenses to withstand impacts of a .25” steel ball fired at 150fps or .15 projectiles fired at 640-660 fps to keep your eyes protected in tactical and shooting environments.

CAPTIVATE™ Lens Technology

Captivate is a new lens technology that is redefining color and how you view it through the lenses of Wiley X.  CAPTIVATE™ filters out light in the areas where green merges with red and blue merges with green.  This technology allows more light into the lenses allowing you see clear vibrant contrasts and vivid details.  This clear polarized vision allows you to see without the haze created by traditional sunglasses.  Eliminating blue light haze allows you to see enhanced color and better depth perception which is pretty important whether you are on the shooting range, in the mountains or doing a little fishing on open water or streams.  CAPTIVATE™ offers a variety of lens tint options so you can create the best choice for your specific requirements.

Summary

We are now using the Captivate Polarized Bronze Mirror lens with a lens base color of copper.  These lenses are designed for bright sun and changing light conditions as well as cloudy and overcast days.  They are perfect for hiking and hunting as well as shallow water fishing and red clay or brackish water.  This lens color is also great for general day driving.  We noticed right off the bat that we got zero eye strain after wearing the WX Omega for several hours on a recent trip.  The glasses are comfortable and the colors just pop. Taking a walk out in the woods on a recent trip with our puppy, Miko, we noticed the exceptional clarity.

What does all of this mean?  What it means to us is that when we are pheasant hunting, we can pick up the birds faster.  When we are deer hunting, we can pick up the movement a little faster.  When we are duck hunting, we can see the ducks a little clearer and when we are fishing, we can pick up the movement of the fish.  Throughout all of this, your eyes should be protected by the best lens technology in the business and safe for shooting or working conditions where you need safety glasses to keep your eyes safe.

The WX Omega Sunglasses are worth taking a serious look at.  We recommend the new CAPTIVATE™ lenses for the exceptional clarity which will open up your eyes while on the hunt.
