Shooting Clays for the Hungry by Josh Rather
My sister and I were asked to come participate in a shooting clays competition, for Hunters for the hungry. We both were very excited we use to shoot clays in the 4H club and with friends. It had been a while since we both had shot and we were both nervous, but we knew it was for a good cause and didn’t worry that much when we arrived. When we parked the truck and walk over to the sign in table we noticed that a lot of the people there, we knew and were friends with, they had the meeting with all the shooters to go over the course and talk about the safety rules. Finally it came time to start. They split us into groups and I got put with the little kids but I didn’t mind. I volunteered to shoot first because a lot of the kids in the group had never shoot before. I knew the instructor that was in our group and he asked me to help the kids shoot and get lined up, and how to watch and lead the clays. This was also my first time shooting a course like this, I was use to shooting from a high and low house, but I was up for the challenge.
As we went to different stations I was amazed at just how hard some were, they had some that skipped across water and some that shot straight up almost. I had no clue what the next part of the course had in store. We finished the first stage and went back to the shed where we waited for the other group to finish. As we all sat around I had some of the kids come up and thank me for helping them and told me how much fun they were having, I felt good that I was able to help them. When we went to start the next round I ask my friend who was in the other group how he did he replied, “Good luck I had trouble but you might do better”. I was lost when we came up to the first stage. I was standing in thick woods and when he pulled the trap to show me how it was set up, it flew right over my head and disappeared into the trees. I got nervous. I told him I was ready and yelled pull, I missed. I went on with the rest of my clays on that stage and in the end I hit 4 out of 9. We moved on and finished the other 9 stages and went back to the shed where the other group was waiting, we all sat around and ate and talked about how we did and how much fun we all had. They told us that they would send the awards in the mail because there was another group scheduled to shoot later that day. As we sat around I helped total up the scores for our group, everyone did great and shot very well.
Before everyone left we sat and listened to the guy from Hunters for the hungry, he thanked us for coming out and helping raise money.. Hunters for the hungry are a great organization that provides people who are in need, with a good meal that they might otherwise not get. So if you have the opportunity, donate to Hunters for the Hungry. As we loaded our stuff and told everyone bye, we started out and left for home, I have to say that I had fun and would like to shoot clays again.
My dad told me that shooting clays may help my reaction time and my shooting skills by improving my speed and accuracy. Both which will help me when I am in the field in hunting situations
