Survival Story: Capsized on a Duck Hunt
I have to be honest, when I first saw the video “Capsized,” I really had not thought much about cell phones cases. I have owned several; I have tested multiple cell phone cases over the last 10 years including dropping a few into a toilet to test whether they actually were waterproof. I even threw one into a brick wall to test how well the case held up to those in need of anger management classes. In all that time, I was basically testing how well the case protected the phone, not how well the case protected the user.
“Capsized” tells the story of a father and two boys out for a late-season duck hunt. The story is the one we all fear. They were headed home from the morning duck hunt, they had left a single decoy floating in the water and they spun the V-Hull and it capsized. The water was cold and the three of them were in the water. Immediately they instinctively reached for their phones. James’s phone was soaked; Jimmy’s phone was fried. It was getting cold and Kendrick pulled out his phone which was covered in a Pelican Mariner case. It turned on and they were able to call 911 and have the Coast Guard dispatched to save them. In telling the story to their mom, all of them knew the reality that a phone case was responsible for bringing those boys home alive.
We all think about spending $70.00 to protect our phone but when you think seriously about it, this young man spent $70.00 to protect himself and his family.
Today, I spoke with Lyndon Faulkner, CEO of Pelican Products, Inc. When I asked him what this meant to the team and the employees at Pelican, Lyndon shared with me that Pelican has collected years of stories where their products have helped protect equipment and helped save lives. “These kinds of stories usually come out of first responders; they come out of military use. This is really the first time a story like this has come out of general everyday use with a case and the case saved lives and not just the equipment. This was a human case and it really hit home for our entire team from the ground up.” Pelican has worked hard over the last several years to develop products that protect equipment and lives from phone cases, luggage, flashlights, equipment cases, gun cases and coolers. I do not know about you, but after seeing this video I am personally going to be testing the Pelican Marine case and I will be testing it because someday I just might need it to keep my phone working in the harshest of conditions. Phones can be replaced; lives cannot.
