Midfield, OH (SEPT 24, 2026) – Early-season waterfowl hunting is different from the regular duck season. Warmer weather, green vegetation, and migrating ducks buzzing the decoys are the name of the game. For duck hunters chasing teal, there is little reason to drag a full-size spread into the marsh.
That is where teal-specific decoys earn their place. While teal will decoy to almost anything, a handful of properly sized blue-winged and green-winged duck decoys creates a spread that looks like what early-season migrants are looking for: other teal.
Early season has a different decoy strategy than November. Teal are often less wary than later-season ducks, but targeting their feeding areas remains enormously important. A compact spread of six to twelve decoys is easier to carry into shallow marshes, potholes, creeks, and backwaters. With a smaller spread, every decoy has a purpose.
Teal will decoy to mallards, and plenty of hunters use whatever is already in the bag. However, teal-specific decoys give the spread the right scale, allowing hunters to build a compact, species-focused spread. For hunters walking, wading, using a small boat, or hunting public marshes, this can be a significant advantage. Teal decoys can also fill out a larger spread later in the season, adding versatility when larger numbers of decoys make sense.
Blue-winged, green-winged, or both? Bluewings are the obvious choice for early teal season, but as the migration progresses, greenwings become part of the mix. Which decoys make the most sense depends on where you hunt and what is moving through. There is no need to overthink it. Match the spread to the birds you expect to see and adjust as the season changes.
On small water, six teal decoys can provide a compact arrangement. Larger water may call for adding multiple packs, either as a mix of blue-winged and green-winged decoys or, where appropriate, as a species-specific set. Hunters can also use teal decoys in small clusters within a larger spread to add variety and create a more diverse-looking group of birds.
