BHA Responds to Appointment of Moore as Forest Service Chief

MISSOULA, Mont. – Following an announcement by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack of the appointment of Randy Moore as chief of the U.S. Forest Service, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers President and CEO Land Tawney offered the following response:

“Randy Moore brings a career spent in public resource management to the helm of the U.S. Forest Service. He is a dedicated leader with expertise stretching from coast to coast and beyond, as well as detailed knowledge of all facets of the agency he will be charged with overseeing. Our Forest Service lands provide some of the best hunting and fishing on the continent, and American sportsmen and women have a unique appreciation of their value – to fish and wildlife and members of the public.

“BHA’s California chapter has been working with Randy’s team in the USFS Pacific Southwest Region on habitat improvement projects, such as an effort currently underway in several national forests to inventory and repair wildlife guzzlers. The chapter also remains invested in helping to proactively mitigate public land closures in California as the state faces another year of extreme drought and wildfire.

“We at Backcountry Hunters & Anglers look forward to working with Chief Moore to ensure the responsible administration of these critical landscapes, address pressing issues like wildfire management and climate change, integrate local collaboration to help increase access to Forest Service lands, and conserve important habitat for fish and game species.”

Moore’s career with the USDA began in 1978. He is currently the Forest Service’s regional forester for the Pacific Southwest, a role he has held since 2007 in which he oversees 18 national forests in California, as well as state and private forestry programs in Hawaii and the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands. Previously, he was regional forester for the Eastern region and worked for the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Moore will be the first Black Forest Service chief. He will take over leadership from Vicki Christiansen, who is retiring from the agency next month.
