MISSOULA, Mont. – Following a Senate voice vote last night confirming the nomination of Martha Williams as director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with overwhelming bipartisan support, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers President and CEO Land Tawney offered this response:
“Martha Williams brings considerable knowledge, expertise and a deep appreciation of our public lands and waters to her role as director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,” said Tawney. “She has dedicated her career to ensuring the responsible, science-based management of our natural resources and fish and wildlife populations. She’ll bring a steady hand and foresighted leadership to the Fish and Wildlife Service.
“Backcountry Hunters & Anglers remains committed to working alongside our federal resource agencies to conserve the places and opportunities critical to our longstanding outdoor traditions in the United States,” Tawney continued. “Martha Williams is a hunter and angler who appreciates and understands these values. We commend the Senate for its decision to swiftly confirm her nomination, and we look forward to working with Director Williams in the future.”
Williams formerly served as the principal deputy director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She also was director of the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks and an assistant professor of law at the University of Montana, where she co-directed the university’s Land Use and Natural Resources Clinic. She has worked at the Interior Department in the past, serving as deputy solicitor, parks and wildlife.
