BHA Wins Highest Ratings from NGO Watchdogs

Charity Navigator, Great Nonprofits and GuideStar all award BHA top honors

MISSOULA, Mont. – Backcountry Hunters & Anglers attained three top nonprofit certifications in 2019 from three leading NGO watchdog groups: GuideStarCharity Navigator and Great Nonprofits, confirming its financial trustworthiness as individuals weigh end-of-year donations.

Established in 2004 by a group of backcountry sportsmen and women, BHA has rapidly grown to international prominence through innovative coalition building and bold outreach campaigns and now boasts members from every U.S. state and Canadian province and territory.

BHA North American Board Chair Ryan Busse called the certifications a “critical benchmark” for the organization.

“These watchdog groups reinforced what those of us involved with BHA have known for years: This is a conservation organization ‘of the people and for the people,’” said Busse. “We don’t fit many of the traditional nonprofit archetypes, but we’re effective at mobilizing tens of thousands of ardent sportsmen and women to support our lands and waters. These certifications show that we have the integrity, structure and passion to keep gaining momentum – all in the name of our public lands legacy.”

BHA attained GuideStar’s 2019 Platinum Seal of Transparency and ranked in the top percentile of all nonprofits evaluated in the environment category. Charity Navigator gave the organization a score of 93.32 out of 100. Great Nonprofits labelled BHA a 2019 Top Rated Charity. To attain these scores, BHA provided extensive records and data on financial support and organizational expenditures to the groups, which also collected reviews from members and volunteers.

“Backcountry Hunters & Anglers’ exceptional 4-star rating sets it apart from its peers and demonstrates its trustworthiness to the public,” said Michael Thatcher, president and CEO of Charity Navigator. “Only a quarter of charities rated by Charity Navigator receive the distinction of our 4-star rating. This adds Backcountry Hunters & Anglers to a preeminent group of charities working to overcome our world’s most pressing challenges. Based on its 4-star rating, people can trust that their donations are going to a financially responsible and ethical charity when they decide to support Backcountry Hunters & Anglers.”

“I’m proud to say that when you donate to BHA or become a member, you’re directly supporting the public lands and waters that we all enjoy,” said BHA President and CEO Land Tawney. “We put 93 percent of our budget into programmatic work like protecting the Boundary Waters, fighting for full and dedicated funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund and cleaning up your public lands. These top ratings demonstrate the value that we provide to our members and supporters.”
