Celebrating 30 Years of Outdoor Channel with
Tom Nelson of “American Archer”
DENVER (September 3, 2024) – The Outdoor Channel is celebrating its milestone 30th anniversary and the network reflects back on those decades with Tom Nelson, host of American Archer. Since its inception, American Archer has captivated audiences with its thrilling hunts, exotic locales, and in-depth storytelling, making it one of the most beloved shows on the network.
Evolution of Outdoor Programming
Reflecting on the past 30 years, Tom Nelson notes the significant shifts in the television landscape, particularly within outdoor programming. “There is more competition for viewers than in the early days of outdoor TV,” says Nelson. “The younger generation has a shorter attention span and they typically want instant answers and entertainment without the wait. However, sportsmen and women over the age of 45 still enjoy and want to watch television. These are the viewers with the financial resources to purchase the items promoted and book trips with the outfitters featured on the shows they watch.”
Technological Advancements
Technological advancements have greatly impacted the production and consumption of outdoor shows. From drones and small POV (point-of-view) cameras to tapeless recording and improved battery technology, the tools available today have transformed the industry. “The early days of lugging 40-pound Beta cameras around in the woods and fields are now just an ugly memory,” Nelson laughs.
Milestones of American Archer
American Archer has surpassed many milestones since it first aired. “I remember telling my wife in the late ’90s, ‘wouldn’t this be great if it lasted four or five years,’ when we first started producing the series. We surpassed that, then the 10-year anniversary, then the 20, and on we march with our 28th season premiering this October on Outdoor Channel. I am still amazed,” Nelson shares.
Memorable Moments
Nelson looks back fondly on the friendships and lifetime of memories created through his involvement with American Archer and Outdoor Channel. “Each animal in my trophy room reminds me of a past adventure. Trips to exotic destinations such as the Arctic, New Zealand, Europe, and numerous trips to Africa all hold a special place in my mind,” he says. He recalls the physically and emotionally challenging hunts as some of his favorites. “Being stranded in a remote camp, running out of food, equipment breaking down, and so on…these are memories that some may wish to forget but I cherish all of them.”
Collaborations and guest appearances have also left a lasting impact on him. “Working alongside and making friends with other TV personalities has been a great experience for me. Being a guest on numerous other TV shows and having other show hosts on ‘The American Archer’ has been wonderful.”
Lessons Learned
Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Outdoor Channel is a significant milestone for Nelson and his team, both personally and professionally. “It seems like only yesterday that we started production on the show. We have sure learned a lot over three decades. Never give up, listen to your gut, try and educate as well as entertain. Time flies when you’re having fun.”
Nelson concludes his thoughts recognizing the contributions of Outdoor Channel to the show’s success. “Nowhere else would we have built such a loyal audience needed to grow to become a successful show. Looking at the average life of any TV show, especially a bowhunting-only show, most don’t survive more than a few years.”
