MEMPHIS, Tenn. – April 20, 2020 – Ducks Unlimited encourages you to celebrate Earth Day by getting outdoors to experience the natural wonders around us. During these uncertain times, there is no better way to be reminded of why it is so important to protect our planet’s natural resources
The annual celebration for Earth Day is April 22, but every day is Earth Day for Ducks Unlimited because DU conserves, restores and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America’s waterfowl. These positive impacts on our natural ecosystems also benefit people and communities through cleaner water and air, improved flood control, carbon storage, recreational opportunities and climate regulation.
“There are many creative ways to celebrate Earth Day right around your home,” DU Chief Conservation Officer Karen Waldrop said. “Examples include using a recyclable water bottle or planting a garden or a tree. You can also do fun activities like building a wood duck box or bird house. Brush up on your duck identification skills or just take a walk and clean up your neighborhood.”
You don’t have to look far to find public conservation lands and waters near your home. These are perfect places to go fishing, hiking, boating or hunting. Rest assured that time spent outdoors in these special places will lift spirits, bring smiles and foster hope and resilience as we all face challenging times.
“Even though we can’t have public gatherings right now, there are many fun and relaxing ways to enjoy the outdoors while observing social distancing,” Waldrop said. “Public conservation lands and waters are open across the nation for outdoor recreation. We are especially grateful to DU partners with state fish and wildlife agencies and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for their continuing efforts to provide safe and satisfying natural experiences for the public to enjoy on state wildlife management areas and national fish and wildlife refuges.”
