The newest issue of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers’ magazine is available now
MISSOULA, Mont. – The summer issue of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers’ quarterly magazine, Backcountry Journal, is arriving in the mailboxes of BHA members across North America this week. This special issue reflects the challenging times we currently are facing with stories of solitude, lessons learned and even humor while continuing Backcountry Journal’s tradition of paying homage to the wild places and creatures we all love. Voluntary Isolation: Renowned journalist and recipient of BHA’s 2020 Ted Trueblood Award, Christine Peterson ponders isolation from the backcountry lakes of Canada to windswept Wyoming. “Isolation has taken on a new meaning,” she writes, “one that both heals and is to be feared.” She takes us along on a journey toward the healing kind.
Bill Heavey on Having Fun: In “Slim Jims, Cheap Fishing Rods & Half-assing Things,” Field & Stream Editor at Large Bill Heavey shows us that not much is required to have a good time in the outdoors. With his usual humor, Heavey visits locales from Mongolia to the Boundary Waters, getting lost and failing to catch fish while always having a damn good time.
Three in the Woods: Alberta BHA member Jeff Lauze recounts three generations of his family sharing a memorable Canadian public land elk hunt. Lauze shows us how special the chances to hunt with family are and how the places we hunt get woven into not only our memories but who we are as humans.
Fish. Every. Single. Day: BHA member Stephen Veals confronts a run of hard times in life with a quest to fish every day for a year. Along the way, he learns lessons on life, introduces newcomers to the sport, and finds rejuvenation.
Preparation Reigns Supreme: BHA’s 2020 Hike to Hunt challenge just kicked off. Here, Michigan BHA member Jeffrey Petersen recalls some of the lessons he learned during last year’s event – much more than simply getting in shape for the next hunting season.
