Midnight Fishing with Justin by Josh Rather
My friend Justin called me one morning and asked what I was doing that night around 8:30. I told him I had to work and would get off at 9:00, he said “that’s cool, do you want to go fishing?” I told him “sure, I didn’t have anything else to do when I got off.” So I went to work and while I was there, one of my friends that works with me asked how much does a fishing license cost, I didn’t know off the top of my head, so I got my fishing license out and looked to see if it had the cost written on it, as I was looking for it, I discovered that my license had expired two days ago. As I sat there trying to think of what to do and where I could go to get another license, Justin pulled up in the parking lot and called me saying he was ready and waiting. I found the price and told my friend, he thanked me and I went on working. When I finished and got off, I called my dad, knowing that he would know what to do. He told me to try and go to Wal-Mart and see if the sporting section is still open and get my licenses there. I told Justin to go ahead and put the boat in the water and I’ll be there in ten minutes.
I went and got my license and met up with Justin. We got our fishing gear into the boat and launched off from the dock, but me being me, forgot the worms and chicken liver in my truck so we had to turn around and go back to get them. We finally got settled and I got all the stuff situated and we took off up river, we found this spot were a old tree had fallen into the water and was a good spot for fishing the week before, as we neared our spot we noticed two Bass Tracker boats around it, we watched for a few seconds as one reeled in a nice catfish. We were mad, but hey that’s fishing, so we rode back down a little ways and found a spot to anchor and started fishing.
We had been sitting there for about an hour and hadn’t had any luck, when all a sudden Justin’s rod got a bite and the way the fish took the bait you would have thought it was huge . He yelled “get the net, get the net, its huge man! “ I did as he said and was ready and expecting a big catfish to come to the top of the water, when it did come to the top I laughed. It was a catfish the size of a coke bottle. I looked at him and said “that’s huge man, I think that’s a record!” we both laughed and sat back down. About thirty minutes went by when he got another bite and thought it was a huge one again. As he reeled it in he said “it’s a small one it not fighting any, as it came up next to the boat, Justin whispered get the net , I looked thinking he was joking but he wasn’t , sitting beside the boat on his line was a mud cat about 7 pounds , I got it in the net and into the boat , I told him to go ahead and get the hook out and I’ll take a picture of him with it before he threw it back , as he was holding it waiting on me to get the camera, the fish wiggled and Justin lost his grip and the fish fell into the water. We laughed and sat back down and when we were getting ready to move up a little further my rod got a hit. I watched it and when it hit again I jerked back and reeled the fish in, it was a spotted catfish, nothing huge just about 2 pounds.
We moved further up and closer to the bank, it had gotten dark and as we sat waiting for the fish to bite I heard something on the bank next to us. I picked up the spot light and shined it where I heard the noise and there stood a doe drinking water watching us. It finished and walked back into the cover of the trees and darkness’, as we were watching we forgot about our poles and when we went to look back at them we both noticed that all four rods had a fish on them, we quickly grab them and tried to real them in. We were passing poles back and forth like playing muscle chairs and trying not to get in each other’s way. When we noticed that on two of our rods we had a fish and the other two were caught together, we reeled in the fish took pictures and let them go. We sat trying to untangle our lines, my mom calls asking where we were and if we had had any luck, I told her we had caught a few but nothing worth keeping. Justin and I stayed out a little longer after she called and caught a few other catfish some we could have kept and the others too small.
We were just out to have fun and enjoy the outdoors. We had a good time and I can’t wait to go again so that I can beat Justin at catching the most fish again. Another great adventure with a great friend.
