Mule Deer Foundation Applauds Confirmation of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack

Salt Lake City, UT: The Mule Deer Foundation applauds the U.S. Senate for yesterday afternoon’s strong vote to confirm Tom Vilsack as the next secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. During his previous tenure overseeing the department, Vilsack worked closely with conservation organizations and ranchers on national forest lands and sagebrush rangelands to ensure these working landscapes provide quality habitat for a wide range of species, including mule deer. Following is a statement by Mule Deer Foundation President/CEO Miles Moretti:

“The Mule Deer Foundation is excited to once again work with Agriculture Secretary Vilsack on conservation efforts that improve and sustain habitat for wildlife including mule deer and black-tailed deer in the western United States. Under Secretary Vilsack’s leadership, the Natural Resources Conservation Service established a program to restore and conserve our sagebrush rangelands that benefited sage grouse and mule deer as well as hundreds of other species. In addition, national forests and grasslands managed by the U.S. Forest Service provide important habitat used by mule deer across the West. The projects that MDF helps to implement on national forests and grasslands ensure that these lands provide enough habitat to sustain deer populations. We look forward to working with Secretary Vilsack to continue these collaborative landscape conservation efforts.”
