Muzzleloader Buck…

20091107_Picture030So….here’s my story.

We had a ton of rain Thursday morning….but the afternoon turns out okay. I go to my friends ranch….and hunt 80 yds or so away from a food plot.

3/4’s of an hour before sundown…I see a couple does…and two forked horned bucks. Then walks in a better buck…a small eight point. I watch them for awhile…and another small eight comes in. Things are looking good….

Then I see a big bodied 10 pt….I know his horns aren’t real wide….but he’s a mature buck. I glassed him pretty hard for a few minutes…then decide to shoot him…if he gives me a shot. Which he does….and I drop him in his tracks.

The “problem” is….there’s a rain swollen creek between me and the food plot. And I can’t drive my truck over there….I take my boots off..and wade over. Walk up to him…and he is (For around here….!!) one big pig buck.

Horns not extremely wide…but fairly heavy…but the buck is a hog…and makes the horns sorta look small!!  Ha!!

Anyway…..I go to drag him and can’t hardly move him. And to make matters worse….I had forgotten my hunting knife…all I had was a two inch blade…LOL!!  So I don’t gut him….

Takes me 20 min. to get to edge of creek….and then I drag him across the creek…which was some easier…as he floated a bit. Although I was afraid…I was going to fall down…and he would float away!!. Ha!!  Anyhoo…I haul him over to a sand bar…and walk 3/4 mile to my truck up a slick dirt road.

Drive back down…and I work 40 min. to attempt to load this deer in my truck…and I can’t do it!! Too flippin heavy…!!

Long story short…..I drive to friends house…pick him up drive back…load the deer.  Deer weighed 220 lbs….before gutting. We figure the deer was 180 lbs “field dressed”…and might score 135 in…..

A good story, and a good hunt!
