Ranger Pro Ron Nelson Wins FLW Tour Angler of the Year

Pro angler awarded extra $25,000 from Ranger Boats

FLIPPIN, Ark. (August 19, 2020) – Ranger Boats Pro Ron Nelson won the 2020 FLW Tour Angler of the Year award during the FLW Super Tournament at Lake Erie. The Ranger pro has shown remarkable consistency this year and has quickly became on of the hottest sticks on the tour. Along with the title, Nelson was awarded $25,000 in Ranger Cup contingency money.

Nelson began his FLW Pro Circuit career by blanking at his first event at Sam Rayburn in Texas but has since made up for the gaffe by winning three FLW events, taking the 2019 Rookie of the Year title and consistently showing this year to win the coveted Angler of the Year award.

“The angler of the year was my goal from the start,” said Nelson. “It was one of my goals last year or at least have a shot at it. Last year I had a bad first day so that took that away from me. It’s the toughest one to win. All it takes is just one bad day and turn your whole season.”

Consistency is critical to winning any Angler of the Year title. The angler finished 11th or better in the first three events before landing in 41st at Chickamauga and 12th on the Mississippi River. He clenched the title with his 34th-place finish at Lake Erie. Nelson cites setting goals and working hard to achieve them as key to his success.

“I set basic goals,” said Nelson. “I want to make that top-50 cut. That will keep you solid in a points race. Also, I just like to fish so I feel blessed to be where I am at.”

Along with setting his sights on goals, Nelson credits his Ranger boat as instrumental in his consistent success.

My boat has been a huge key,” said Nelson. “We fish big bodies of water like Lake Erie. There’s no land within 30 to 40 miles. You really depend upon your boat when taking those big waves. Just having that peace of mind is great. Knowing that you and others on your boats are safe allows me to focus on catching fish.”

As part of the popular Ranger Cup contingency program, Nelson took home $25,000 from Ranger. The additional winnings provided by Ranger helps anglers stay on tour and continue their dream of fishing competitively.

“That’s a huge deal,” said Nelson. “Ranger has been phenomenal as far as support for the FLW and anglers over the years. To win that money is huge.”
