Every season it seems I have one encounter that is forever burned into my mind. Tonight, I had that encounter. I entered the woods later than I should have, so instead of dragging a scent line to my tree stand like I normally do, I dabbed some scent on my boots and quickly hiked to a nearby brush pile. I decided to get aggressive, in a last ditch effort before gun season started this weekend. I threw out a few grunts, nothing. Next a doe bleat, no response. A half-hour before dark I did a short rattle sequence, kicking the leaves as I rattled. Same result, nothing. Darkness crept in, and just as I stepped out of the brush pile I heard something blazing through the woods directly towards me, on the exact trail I took into the woods. It was too dark to shoot, and I could barely see what was coming, until he was literally 10 yards away from me. Another 5 yards and the buck came to a stop, and then bolted away from me. The adrenaline was insane, it was as though I just shot the deer, and my heart was beating out of my chest! At some point the buck came across my trail and followed it right to me. I’ve always heard that scent can work, but never truly believed it. For all those who still don’t believe in scent, I wish you could have felt my heartbeat after that experience. Looking back on the experience, as thrilling as it was, I should have changed my tactics. Instead of rushing and covering my boots with the scent, I should have taken the few minutes to set up a dragline, because in the end the buck ran in way too close for comfort.
