SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE MEETS WITH SCI FOR EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Washington, DC – [MAY 20, 2020] – Following last week’s interview with Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt, SCI CEO Laird Hamberlin recently met “virtually” with Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue on a wide-ranging variety of topics critical to sportsmen and women. The series leads up to SCI’s “Virtual” Advocacy Week, June 2-4. This exclusive-for-SCI-members week of events provides opportunities for members to advocate for hunting and conservation by hearing from and engaging directly with elected officials through interactive video webinars complete with guest speakers from SCI staff, Members of Congress, and other industry and legislative personalities.

Secretary Perdue opened the interview by discussing his childhood days flushing quail throughout middle Georgia with a shotgun and a bird dog, turkey hunting this spring, and the big bull elk head hanging on the wall of his office at the Department’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. Much of the interview focused on Secretary Perdue’s role overseeing the U.S. Forest Service and implementing some of the most extensive private-land wildlife conservation programs in the nation. The conversation covered other issues as well, including the Farm Bill, hunting access on public land, chronic wasting disease, and wildlife migration corridors.

SCI’s Advocacy team remains engaged with elected officials and government leaders on issues of importance to outdoorsmen, like those discussed with Secretary Perdue. SCI would like to thank Secretary Perdue for his professional and personal dedication to ensuring that wild places and wild things are protected for future generations to enjoy, and for sitting down for the interview.
