SOG Huntspoint Skinning Knife and Boning Knife Review

SOG Huntspoint Knives

SOG Huntspoint High Quality Hunting Knives

SOG has long been a leader in the tactical market for knives and I have used their tactical knives for hunting and have been hoping for some hunting specific knives coming from them.  SOG heard the plea from hunters like myself, who like the American made brand the commitment to quality steel and great design.  SOG held off until they were ready to introduce a best in class knife and this year at SHOT, I got an initial peak at the Huntspoint line.  I was introduced to these knives at a special sneak preview event with MeatEater host Steven Rinella who is now sponsored by SOG.  We got the opportunity to break apart a hog and these knives sliced meat like butter.

The last couple of years, I have used a variety of knives from SOG mixed in with a few other brands over the last 4 years for different purposes and I was excited to get a set of the Huntspoint knives in my hands.   SOG sent out a set of these knives for us to test out this year and I am happy to oblige.  Both knives came well packaged, individually with both the knife and an American made leather sheath that fits the knife perfectly with a snap enclosure and both knives have the American S30V Stainless steel blade and the rosewood handles and each knife comes with a lanyard hold which I will quickly lace up to some 550 cord so I have enough of a loop to keep these attached to my wrist when gutting or skinning and within easy reach.

Each knife is well shaped and purpose driven and each has the stylish rosewood handles that make these knives attractive enough to wear and still be effective in the field.  I took these knives out to do some cutting and when I was completed took out my Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener 2.2.1 and both of these knives with the S30V Stainless Steel sharpened up fast.  This sharpener is best in class for a field sharpener but with these knives the choice on this USA Stainless Steel is what will keep you coming back to these knives year after year.  Field and Stream named both of these knives The Best New Hunting Knives of 2013 and I have to agree with them.

SOG Huntspoint Skinning KnifeThe Huntspoint Skinning Knife has an overall length at 8.20 inches with a blade length of 3.6”  The blade is a drop point knife that weighs in at 3.70 ounces with a sold feel that is well balanced.

SOG Huntspoint Boning KnifeThe Huntpiont Boning Knife has an overall length at 8.20 inches with a blade length at 3.6” with a straight edge and a drop point blade shape.  The boning knife also weighs in at 3.70 ounces and has a solid feel as well.  I will most likely use each knife for it’s intended purposes with the skinning knife being my goto field knife and the boning knife as my backup once the game is on the gambrel.

My only regret is that I didn’t get these engraved because I know my buddies are going to want to steal them once they get a chance to test these out.  I will state that these knives are also not the cheapest in the market but with quality steel, a high quality leather sheath and American made quality you’re going to have a knife that is going to last decades.

You can get yours at SOG Knives and I expect most retailers will have these in stock in the coming months for the upcoming season.  My recommendation is going to be to get your order in fast because as word gets out these knives may be a little scarce, they really are that good!!!
