Anglers win more than $29,000 in winnings
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (July 20, 2020) – Austen Rivera, of Port O’ Conner, Texas, and Chris Castillo, of Nacogdoches, Texas, weighed a two-fish limit that totaled 16.56 pounds to win the first regular-season event for the Texas Division of the IFA Redfish Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops & Cabela’s on July 11, at Port Lavaca, Texas. The team won a fully rigged Ranger RB190 boat prize package powered by a 90-horsepower, four-stroke Mercury outboard.
The anglers opted to stay relatively close to the launch and targeted reds in Matagorda Bay. With a high pressure system overhead, the team reported hot weather and low water.
“The conditions made for a tough day of fishing,” said Rivera. “It was a great day. We were fortunate that the fish bit when they needed to.”
Rivera and Castillo caught their limit sight-casting Berkley Gulp! ripple mullets to schools of redfish. The team took advantage of the Anglers Advantage contingency program and added and extra $2,000 dollars. By catching the heaviest fish of the day on a Berkley Gulp! bait, they won the $500 Berkley Big Redfish award along with $250 credit to the Berkley website for a total of $29,750 in winnings.
Second-place finishers Joshua Gregory and RP Scritchfield weighed a total of 15.66 pounds to take home the $1,359 second-place prize money. They added $1,200 in Anglers Advantage cash.
Alan Thompson and Tanner Thompson came in a close third with 15.16 pounds to win a total of $1,544 in winnings.
The next stop for the IFA Redfish Tour is set for Jacksonville, Florida, on August 1. Teams that compete in at least two regular-season events will be qualified for the 2020 IFA Redfish Tour Championship.
